Referring to the fact that 200,000 books per year are published in the United States, Marion Gropen of the self-publishing e-list said:
It’s easy for someone who hasn’t really seen what 200,000 books look
like to underestimate the task. If each book took up 1 inch of width on
a shelf, and the shelves were 1 foot apart, and 6 feet high, then the
books would take up more than 1/2 mile of book cases. Every year. And
your book is taking up 1 inch of shelving on one shelf in the maze. Why
would they ever see it?
