Mystery solved, it was a house fire

A big one, five alarms.

The weird thing is, that I never smelled a whiff of smoke–from inside my house, when I went out to try and see what was happening, or when I took the cats to the vet! A devastating house fire about a hundred yards away from my house, and I never smelled a thing! I smell the smoke when my neighbors burn brush, from woodstoves and fireplaces, I smell exhaust from people’s lawn mowers and whatnot…but I never smelled any smoke from this house fire. I must have been straight upwind. I didn’t see any obvious damage when I went by the house, but it sounds like the whole fire was at the back.

Don’t park your rider lawn mower in the basement, is the obvious lesson here! (I hate those things, anyway.)
