So, are we blaming this on Harry Potter, too?

‘Fight Clubs’ for Techies’

It’s long been a stereotype that IT professionals and engineers are soft, squishy geeks with no social skills, who divert their inner aggression into ferocious technical slang and hyper-macho role-playing and video games (for which the the toughest body parts required are the posterior and the wrist). This presents a somewhat different picture! Should we be disturbed by this trend? Recently I was looking for some strength-training paraphernalia to replace some of mine that was wearing out. I had to buy it all online because the local sporting goods stores don’t carry much for strength training anymore. The hot new sport, judging from the amount and variety of merchandise? Boxing. My guess is that movies like “Cinderella Man” and “Million Dollar Baby” are behind this fad–which is attracting women as well as men. Is this more worrisome even than “Harry Potter”?
