Better outcome than I deserve, probably…

…after procrastinating so shamefully on this little chore. I finally have a hotel reservation in Saratoga Springs for World Fantasy Convention.

It took some calling around! All six of the hotels booked by the convention are full. I had to fall back on the general list of Saratoga Springs accommodations. I didn’t want to pay for a hoity-toity place and I knew better than to go for the cheapies, especially in a racetrack/casino town. (After working for years in Fitchburg, and doing so much with homeless folks, I can tell you a lot about cheap motels that you really don’t want to know!) I tried the Super-8, for which my AAA membership qualified me for a discount. But they had a different group coming in, half their rooms under renovation, and no space. So I tried the Best Western, and spoke to a Mr. Hussain, with some awkwardness because my ear is just not tuned very well to heavy Middle Eastern accents. But he had space, so I finally, after about six phone calls, have reservations, and for reasonable rates: as good as I could have gotten in one of the convention hotels at their group rate. It’s three miles on the highway from the convention center. Now I just need to figure out parking, if I drive to the convention from my hotel. But that’s a minor concern compared to not having a room at all!

Yes, I have family in Saratoga Springs, and I’m sure I’ll visit them while I’m out there. But I did’t want to impose on them. They have jobs and kids in school, and I can keep weird hours when I’m at a convention, especially given that I’m a marathoner and a compulsive volunteer-to-help-out type. The whole event is being billed to By Light Unseen Media, anyway–it’s a business trip! 🙂

That feels good to have taken care of. I’m going to get a haircut in a few minutes, and that will feel good, too. I’m just about in sheepdog territory here. 🙂
