Ice Storm in Progress!

Apparently, in Boston and south of here generally, they’re only getting a lot of rain. We got a nice ice storm–temperature stayed right at the freezing mark and it rained and rained and rained, leaving a heavy glaze (up to 1/4 inch) on everything. And it’s still raining! There will be even more! I haven’t ventured past my newspaper box, so I don’t know if there’s been much tree damage. I took the new camera out and got some pictures.

January 2007 Ice Storm

JUST as I was typing this, at 3:09pm, the power went out. Fortunately, I have a laptop, so I didn’t lose everything, but I did put the computer on standby. I dug out an old-fashioned “plug in” telephone and called the power company’s outage-reporting 800- number. With no idea how long the power would be out, given the weather conditions, I went out and got some firewood, before it got too dark, and got the Coleman lantern out of the camping closet. Just as I was starting a fire in the fireplace, the power went back on–it was off about one hour. However, as it is now below freezing and there’s more precipitation on the way followed by high winds, I wouldn’t be surprised if we lose power again.

But an ice storm and power outage isn’t the best thing about today. No, no, no! No, the best thing about today (at least so far) is that today, with a huge winter storm stalled over the entire eastern third of North America, with very cold temperatures due to come sweeping in as soon as the storm finally passes by, with today a laundry day so my laundry room clothesline is completely full…

…my water bed decided this morning was the perfect time to spring one of its semi-annual leaks. So I woke up this morning in a cold puddle, and had to pull the whole bed apart, find the leak, patch it, mop the water out of the bed frame, dry off the bed components, and make up the futon in the front room for the next couple of nights while the patch and the bed sections dry. Fortunately, I’ve gotten the front room so tidied up and cleared out that making up the futon is no problem–it just completely confuses the cats. I made the futon up by flashlight, actually, because it was something to do while the power was out.

It’s not even suppertime yet, so who knows what the day might still have in store??
