Albacon 2008 Report

Under a cut to spare f-lists (it’s long)

Pictures worth a thousand words…

Mind you, you’re still going to get a thousand words! *wry grin*

I made a little photo-essay documenting how I spent a fair amount of my time yesterday.

*amazed stare*

I got it to work! I recorded directly onto a DVD in the camcorder and then played the DVD in my DVD player! There are my kitchen and my cats, on TV! 🙂

I’m not sure that’s how I want to do the kids’ movie…this camcorder will also plug right into the TV itself and also connect to the computer’s USB port. Trouble is, its mic picks up its own noise, and the mini-DVD makes noises. The camcorder also records to a memory card, which makes no noise at all. So I’m still thinking it over. But what a fun toy!

Appearance and Article

I’ll be out at Albacon this weekend, from Friday, October 10th to Sunday, October 12th, in Albany, New York.

I don’t think I have a reading time, unless I can pick up an open space. Albacon’s scheduled Guest of Honor was Anne McCaffrey, but most unfortunately, she has been forced to cancel for health reasons. Her son, Todd McCaffrey, will be attending as a guest. This means that the schedule is still in flux (and my sympathies go out to the concom).

However, I am doing an activity with the kids’ program on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. I’m planning to do some theatre games and then have us all make a very very short movie, like the grown-ups will be doing the next day as one of the convention events. I finally have an excuse to try out my new camcorder! On Saturday and Sunday I’m participating in three panels and moderating a fourth one, so I’ll be busy.

I responded to a HARO query about NaNoWriMo and the writer used my response. It’s a short piece (and she wanted a “statement” of 25 to 50 words–imagine describing NaNo that briefly!), but my photo and the link to my author website is there. If you’d like to read the article, it’s at: NaNoWriMo: November is for Writing on the Suite101.com website.

Water and Fire

This boat has been outside a bodywork shop a few doors up the road from my house for months–the cover was off it today so I took this picture. I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I would choose that name for a boat. 8-( (I believe it’s for sale, if you’re in the market for a boat–and you’re really, really brave!)

I finally got a cord of firewood for the winter. I’ve been looking for firewood for a couple of months. The best price I heard was up by my dad’s, but I called them and they wouldn’t deliver this far away. I found this vendor, Shawn Thibeault, when I passed a sign by the side of the road while running errands on Monday. I pulled off the road, turned around, and drove back just to copy down the phone number. We played telephone tag for two days, and when we finally connected today, he said he had a cord ready to go today but the buyer cancelled, and he offered me $20 off if I wanted it. I said, “I’ll take it.” I’ll probably order another cord from him as soon as I stack this one and figure out where I can put a second cord. It’s absolutely gorgeous wood–all red oak with a little red maple. The cord I bought last fall was kind of crappy.

Various updates

My dad got home yesterday just fine. I called him at around 5:30 p.m. because I hadn’t heard anything, and if he wasn’t home before my sister got here, she might have to stop by my house on her way from the airport to get a key to dad’s house. But then, I wasn’t sure what my sister’s exact itinerary was, either, because neither she nor my dad have ever told me anything but the dates. I didn’t know what flight Jill was on, when it was arriving, and I’m not even positive whether she’s here until Saturday or Sunday! In any event, dad answered the phone at the house, and you’d have thought I’d called in the last two minutes of a tied Patriots game, he was so short with me for calling him. He didn’t want to talk, he was all flustered and mad as a wet hen about having to spend 36 hours in the hospital, he didn’t have any test results, and he just wanted to check his e-mail and snail mail and settle in. He sure didn’t want to talk to me! Sheesh!

I think he was sick of being lectured and was anticipating another earful when Jill got there–although at that time, he said she hadn’t called him, either, so I don’t know when she got in. I know her business conference was today and I think tomorrow, she’s staying in the hotel there tonight. I called her home number in Illinois and left a message asking what flight she was on, but my brother-in-law never called me back, either.

At least dad’s cat was okay, he’d been stranded outside the whole time dad was at Heywood.

here be political topics, ye be warned

Tentative update on my dad

I talked to dad at around noon, after having considerable difficulty connecting to his room at the hospital. He’s having a “nuclear stress test” today, which involves stuff with dye and isotopes and a series of imaging sessions spaced over about seven hours. The last session was supposed to be at 2:00 p.m. and then dad expected to be discharged to go home. He said he’s feeling much better. He’s gotten lots of chewing out from my sister and the doctors about his meds and he’s progressed to getting defensive about it. *sigh* He said he “didn’t think they were finding anything” with the stress test and just wanted “to cover all their bases.” I hope so.

You’d think someone with my dad’s I.Q. wouldn’t do something so clueless with his prescribed medication, but when comes to health stuff, my dad just doesn’t want to deal. It’s very frustrating. He’s going to get more lectures, because my sister is flying out today for a business conference and then is staying with dad for a couple of days–this was planned a while ago. She is not happy with dad at the moment!

And another reason…

…why I can’t get stuff done!

When I was reviewing The Home Office From Hell Cure, I realized that the author should add to his amusing list, “if you’re always pulling cat fur out of the USB port, you have a Home Office From Hell!”

This is Vincent’s favorite spot a good deal of the time. Now, if he would just sleep by the computer, it would be rather cute. Annoying, but cute. But no, of course not–he snuggles up to the computer, tries to snooch up onto the keyboard (it’s warm), rubs his head against the computer and my hand, and wants to pillow his head on my arm while I type. I keep shoving him over a few inches and he sprawls right back. Vincent’s ability to sprawl defies the laws of Newtonian physics, and his fur sprawls several inches further than he can.

I need a bigger table, that’s all there is to it. A MUCH bigger table. 🙂
