Monthly Book Club at Beals Library

Are you an avid reader? Do you enjoy discussing your thoughts and reactions to a book with other readers? Well, the Beals Memorial Library in Winchendon hosts a monthly book club that is open to new members!

Held at 1:00 PM on the second Friday of every month, the Beals Book Club is a discussion group that allows readers to exchange ideas, observations, and reactions to the plots, characters, and themes of selected books. For their upcoming December meeting, the club has chosen the book, Ordinary Grace, by William Kent Krueger, a historical mystery/coming-of-age story about the fateful summer that changed a young boy’s life, as narrated by his adult self.

The next Beals Book Club meeting will be held on Friday, December 13 at 1:00 p.m. All books are provided by the library.

House of Peace and Education in Gardner has some great programs for children and women available to local residents.

HOPE for Kids has three afterschool programs. The Afterschool program, a professionally directed mentoring and tutoring, serves children in grades 3 and 4. The Pals Mentoring program is a professionally directed mentoring program that provides young children with opportunities for fun, peer interaction, creative skills development, positive social behaviors, building friendships and exploring expressions of feelings. Teen HOPE is a professionally directed program that offers youth in grades 5-7 academic, cultural and social skill building support.

HOPE Job Readiness & Training Program is an 8 week individualized program of computer and job-skills training for adults who wish to learn new skills in order to enter or re-enter the workforce, to get better jobs or to improve the quality of life for themselves and their families.

The VFW Post 5613 Auxiliary will be hosting their annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, November 30th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. It will be held at the VFW Hall on Hathorn Road (off Route 202) in Jaffrey, NH. Admission is free. A perfect start to your holiday shopping.

Offering over 40 tables of art and lots of various handcrafted items, Christmas décor, home décor, cards, jewelry, candles, personal care items and more, plus product vendors…Something for everyone! Bake sale and hot and cold lunch items will be available for purchase. Raffle winners will be announced approximately 1:30.

Gardner Area League of Artists Small Works Holiday Art Sale continues through December 21

GALA’s Small Works Art Sale is a show of art work that is only 12” x 12” or smaller and all artwork is $100 and under. This is our most popular show for people to purchase because it's affordable. People come and shop for presents for family and friends or something special for themselves.

The art displays are replenished as art is sold, so there is always something new to see. GALA is open every Saturday and Sunday, 12:00–5:00 p.m. You can make an appointment to see art during the week by calling 978-407-1419.

Beals Memorial Library 10:30-11:30 a.m. Toddler Time For Children 3 & Under. Toddler Time is a drop-in program for children ages 3 years and under accompanied by a parent or other adult. This program features stories, songs, rhymes, crafts and play. This is an interactive program that is designed for toddlers and their caregivers. Toddler Time lasts approximately 30-40 minutes with 15-20 minutes following the session for parent/child social interaction and play. Parents are required to participate with their child, and are asked to limit personal conversations and cell phone use until the 15 minute social period. Siblings are welcome to attend the toddler session; however, siblings cannot be left unattended in the library while a parent is in Toddler Time. Conservation Commission Members Needed

TOWN OF WINCHENDON:

The Conservation Commission is charged to protect the resource areas and associated values currently being regulated under the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act (Massachusetts General Law Ch. 131, Sec.40; the Act) to a greater degree, to protect additional resource areas beyond the Act recognized by the Town as significant. To protect the wetlands, related water resources, and certain adjoining land areas in the Town by providing for prior review and control of activities deemed to have a significant or cumulative adverse effect upon wetland values.

The Conservation Commission consists of five members and the Town has only three currently. We need your help! Don’t be afraid to step forward if you have any interest in serving your Town in this way. Lots of help and guidance can be provided.

The Town of Winchendon with a population of 10,542 and a budget of $32.5 million is seeking a highly qualified individual to fill the position of Assistant Treasurer-Collector. The Assistant Treasurer-Collector is appointed by the Town Manager and is responsible for assisting the Town Treasurer-Collector in all areas of responsibility, including collection, treasury, debt management, benefit administration, bokkeeping, human resource duties and filing mandated reports with various agencies. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, in a tactful and effective manner; ability to deal with unpleasant or tense situations involving staff and/or the public, ability to maintain detailed and extensive records and to track deadlines, ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal effectively with interruptions. An Associate's degree in business or finance in required and a Bachelor's degree in business or finance is preferred; two (2) years of experience in benefits and payroll processing, preferably in a municipal setting; or any equivalent combination of education or experience. Experience using MUNIS financial software is also strongly preferred. Starting pay for this 37 hour/week position ranges from $20.10 to $25.73/Hr. depending on qualifications.
