Quick hello from the publishing house…

Wow, is it quiet online today–and off. The weather is vaguely unsettled, so it’s not too hot, and it will be sunny one moment and suddenly pouring rain, then sunny again. My neighbors seem to be out for the day. My neighborhood, in general, is so quiet, I’m aware of how much noise one car makes going down the road (it’s amazing)–and I’m at least 150 feet from any road. But today borders on unearthly. Everyone must be on vacation!

I’m setting up editions of Mortal Touch, in between chewing over Chapter 16 of The Longer the Fall. The more I write on TLtF, the more I want to cut from the first half, but right now, I just need to keep on going. I went through MT last night and made some minor corrections. Then I tweaked the front cover color balance a bit. I uploaded the corrected book block and the tweaked cover to my Lulu account, because revisions are free of charge there (LSI makes me pay for every revision). I’ve ordered a copy to see how the cover prints–it tends to skew red too much, and prints dark, so I made it lighter and more blue. I need to upload the corrected book block to Search Inside the Book, the Kindle edition, and the CreateSpace edition.

Yep, I finally caved and switched the Amazon paperback edition to CreateSpace. They’re waiving the set-up fee for “Pro,” and I’ll make much more per copy with each sale. The books will ship faster, too. Right now, that’s still switching over. I got my new block of 100 ISBN numbers from Bowker and I’ve assigned ISBN’s to all the editions of MT, TLtF and Gideon Redoak I plan to release.

I’ve sold a couple more paperback editions of MT, and another Kindle edition. At least, I think I have. I’m baffled at the moment because on July 25th, MT’s Sales Rank plummeted from “remainder territory” to under 100K. Cool, I thought, a sale! Except…no order shows up in my account with LSI. Did someone buy the book from Amazon and then change their mind and cancel? I guess that could have happened, but, wah! I’m hoping it’s a glitch with LSI. They’ve been announcing some big update to their website, with scheduled down time, this coming Tuesday. I’ll check after that and see.

I’ve heard complaints that Amazon was telling customers that books printed by LSI would take weeks to ship (part of that whole “Amazon forcing publishers to use their POD” controversy). That didn’t seem to be the case with MT, but it was true that you couldn’t seem to select the fastest shipping options. Switching to CreateSpace should fix that–at least, it better! That’s Amazon’s primary rationale for implementing the policy!

Meanwhile, I’m setting up a hardcover edition of MT with LSI. The trickiest part of that is designing a dust jacket. I have a template from LSI, and they generate the bar code for me, for free. But the sizes are different and there are new components, like the inside flaps, and so on. But the book block is the same. That’s why I’m using the 6″ x 9″ trim size, it can be bound in paperback or hardcover without a change, except to the copyright page.

I’m doing this because I’ll be exhibiting at the New England Library Association show in October, and the copy of MT I donated to the Pepperell library has been very popular. Libraries prefer hardcover editions, and the only upfront cost is the set-up fee and the proof copy. I plan to set up all my titles in hardcover and paperback editions, so I may as well get the procedures down.

The last “cover” I need to design is a CD case insert for the e-book and audio-book editions. But that should be much easier than a dust jacket! The dust jacket is fussy, with all the bleed allowances and the allowance for the fold-over on the flaps and everything.

The blackberries are ripening. I’m going to have more blackberries than I know what to do with! They’re huge and plump and juicy because we’ve had so much rain–July was one of the wettest on record, with twice the normal amount of rainfall and twice the average number of thunderstorms, many of them destructive or deadly. Alas, the blackberries are also a bit watery and not as tasty as usual because we’ve had so much rain. But they’re still good! What the tomatoes and peppers will do is still an open question.

Mystery solved, it was a house fire

A big one, five alarms.

http://www.nashobapublishing.com/pepperell/ci_10066224

The weird thing is, that I never smelled a whiff of smoke–from inside my house, when I went out to try and see what was happening, or when I took the cats to the vet! A devastating house fire about a hundred yards away from my house, and I never smelled a thing! I smell the smoke when my neighbors burn brush, from woodstoves and fireplaces, I smell exhaust from people’s lawn mowers and whatnot…but I never smelled any smoke from this house fire. I must have been straight upwind. I didn’t see any obvious damage when I went by the house, but it sounds like the whole fire was at the back.

Don’t park your rider lawn mower in the basement, is the obvious lesson here! (I hate those things, anyway.)

How awful, it’s a…?????

Whew. There has been some huge thing happening right in back of my house for most of the afternoon…and I don’t have the slightest idea what it is. The street behind mine is a numbered state road and fairly well-trafficked. Around noon, I heard sirens. By 1:00 p.m., I heard sounds of activity from the street in back: voices, large idling engines, and something like a huge saw. (Jaws of Life? Were they cutting through a wall to get into a building?) I got curious enough to go out and walk to my back property line, but despite trying several spots, with the distance, buildings and foliage I couldn’t make out what the heck was happening. All I could see was emergency vehicles lining the road, a few people–I saw a stretcher go back and forth. I didn’t want to walk through my neighbors’ yards just to rubber-neck.

This went on and on, and I needed to get two of the cats to the veterinarian for routine check-ups and shots at 2:00 p.m.. When I left, with wailing cats in the car, the top of the street behind me was blocked off and a police officer was directing traffic–and there was a fire truck there, from Hollis, New Hampshire! When I came home with the cats about forty minutes later, I had to pull over in the rotary to let an ambulance go by, sirens screaming–from Chelmsford, Mass!

Whatever this was, our people called in assistance from multiple surrounding towns–but if it was a fire, I didn’t see or smell smoke. If it was an accident, I didn’t hear anything (on this quiet, peaceful day with all my windows open–I once heard an actual accident at about that same spot, late one night, and it was very noticeable). If it was a gas leak, chemical spill or whatever, no one has come to my door to advise me of a risk. There are still emergency vehicles there now, and I can’t perceive any clues as to what the emergency is.

I hate that. *grump* I hate to pester the dispatcher by calling the police information line just to ask what’s going on.

Because I haven’t for a while…random updates!

Wow, July has been a busy month! I still haven’t written up a full Readercon report, but I’ll be doing that.

I’ve started making a “to-do list” in my journal every day, with two sections. The first section is in red, and is the things that I want to get done today. The second section is long-term projects that couldn’t be easily finished in one day, but which I should be working on. If I finish a task, I highlight it in yellow. If I work on a longer task, I partially highlight it. Then, the next day, I copy-and-paste the whole list to the current day’s entry, delete the highlighted items, add new ones, if necessary, and un-highlight the projects I worked on the day before. This way I keep a record of exactly what I’m supposed to be doing, and what I’ve done, each day.

This is having two effects. I’m getting things done, and, the list is depressing me. 🙁

The weekend of July 12th, I absolutely had to get out and work in the yard, or it would be a lost cause. The weather was gorgeous, and this is not proving to be a clement summer–mostly because it’s been so wet and there have been so many thunderstorms. So, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday that weekend, I went out each day and mowed the lawns and weeded. I got four garden carts full of weeds pulled and cut down, and I feel so much better!

But I also planted things. This spring, I bought bulbs and a rose bush. At the end of June, I’d gotten my dad a fountain liner for his outdoor fountain at Lowe’s, and impulsively bought two tomato plants and two pepper plants. But I never got anything into the ground, even the plants, which were languishing in their pots and almost dying. I’d like to roto-till up large areas of both the front and back yards, dig out my compost piles, till in the compost, and make real vegetable gardens. But this is just a bigger project than I’ve found time for (maybe I’ll do it in the fall).

Despite how late it was, I decided to go ahead and try to get things in, so it wouldn’t be a total waste of money. I dug up a sunny patch, and put in the two tomato plants, one pepper plant (I broke one, to my annoyance), and I planted a bunch of garlic cloves, which I’d also planned on doing. I cleaned out two big planters I used for tomato and pepper plants a couple of summers ago. In one, I planted the package of gladiola bulbs I had, and in the other, the package of tiny little bulbs for something called “shooting stars.” I’d never heard of them before but the hardware store was selling them, and the picture on the package looked pretty. Then I dug a deep hole and put in the rose bush, although I suspected I had neglected it too long and let it dry out and die.

It’s now been two weeks since I put everything in. The rose bush looks like a lost cause–I’ll have to buy a new one next spring, I guess. That’s my own fault for not getting it planted faster. Nine of the ten glads are up and about a foot tall, while one is just sprouting. I thought I’d waited too long for the “shooting stars” and they’d dried out, but they’re starting to come up. I probably planted them all upside-down, they were so small! I’ll be curious to see what they end up doing. The tomato plants are getting taller and have one baby tomato. The pepper plant is kind of sitting there and is a bit yellowish, and I think it has one embryonic pepper on it. About a dozen of the garlic have come up so I might get a decent string of garlic out of those. (Tomatoes, peppers and garlic: I have a nice little spaghetti sauce patch. 🙂 )

The blackberry canes I’m cultivating by the northeast corner of the house are loaded with green berries. I found several other places where the blackberries are bearing once I weeded. I’ve been going out most days that it isn’t raining and picking fresh blackberries and adding them to my fruit mix for supper. They’re ripening at all different rates because of the varying amounts of sun they get. It’s a trip to be eating right out of my yard, without doing any work! 🙂 The day lilies put on a very nice show, but they really got pounded by all the rain we’ve had this week, and they’re about at the end of their run now.

The only problem with having the yard in better shape is that it now distracts me in a different way. Instead of feeling guilty and fidgety because the yard needs attention, I tend to wander outside and weed and water, or just sit by the open back window looking out at the plants and enjoying the peace and quiet. I’ve thought about taking the computer outside, since I have wireless, but there are mosquitoes. I still can’t believe that I’ve completely reclaimed the east side yard and have mown grass growing there instead of tangles of tall weeds or an impassable jungle of roof-high overgrown forsythia (which is what it was about five years ago). I’m spending a lot of time walking around barefoot in my yards.

The appliance repairman came today and replaced the gas connector on the stove–$131, ouch. But that’s a lot less than a new stove would cost–man, they’re expensive. The camp stove was handy to make a pot of tea last night (I make a pot every day), but I’ve put it away now. I miss camping!

I’m making serious progress on The Longer the Fall. It’s coming slowly but it’s getting written! My fellow author Morven Westfield has actually been a big help. She started a weekly “Progress Report” section in the New England Horror Writers forum. Each week, she challenges us to report on our writing accomplishments for the week. I’m finding that I have to write something, just so I can report it in the forum, if for no other reason! I seem to be doing a lot of non-fiction writing, and I’m waiting for an author contract to be returned, and then I’ll be editing. Whew.

And–last piece of news–I was very naughty. I bought myself a digital camcorder. My sister and brother-in-law gave me a Target gift card for my birthday, and I decided to use it toward a camcorder. Mind you, this is not exactly an impulse purchase. I’ve been pining for a videocamera for about two decades! And I’ve seriously wanted a digital camcorder for over a year, as it became more and more obvious how important video is becoming for marketing and promotion. Now I’ve got one. I haven’t sat down and really gone through the learning curve with it yet. This is my birthday and Yule present to myself this year–I never indulge on myself, I’m so fiscally conservative it hurts.

Adventures in home ownership, chapter 1,236

So, I just had the gas company man here, at 1:30 a.m., in a thunderstorm, to shut off the gas to my kitchen stove. Arrgghh…

I’ve been noticing whiffs of gas smell off and on for a while, but only tiny little whiffs. I knew I had to have the stove looked at, but I just hadn’t gotten to it. Well, tonight, the smell was more persistent, stronger, and…the stove was hissing. I knew that couldn’t be good. 8-(

So, with visions of the house blowing up at the crack of dawn and reducing all of us to charred bones (you think your mind is full of icky bits, lourdesmont? *heh*), I called the gas company (three times, but let’s not go there), and the maintenance guy came out, poked around the stove, and turned off the gas. He said the flexible connector hose thingie in back has cracked. I can replace the stove, or just the connector, but I need to call an appliance service for that. Meanwhile, I can function without the stove for a little while. I have a microwave, a toaster-broiler and a propane camp stove. I’m sure my dad would be delighted if I ran up to his house to bake bread! 🙂

At least now I’ll have a bit more peace of mind, because those little whiffs of gas smell were making me nervous. But yeesh–of course the darn thing decides to spring a serious leak in the middle of a pitch dark night when it’s pouring rain and thundering! I don’t know if the gas company will charge me for this…but I don’t care, actually.

Now I need to think about creative stove solutions. I actually got this one for free, from a co-worker who was remodelling her house. Hmmmm…

More cool stuff…

I came home from Saturday at Readercon (I was commuting to the con) to find a notification of a new online review of Mortal Touch. I had discovered this review site, Bitten by Books, when Mayra Calvani interviewed the owner for Blogcritics. I queried them and sent off a copy. They gave me a terrific review!

http://bittenbybooks.com/?p=631

I was on a high all the next day at Readercon. I sold at least two copies of Mortal Touch at the convention, too–I know because I gave two people Tarot readings. I’ll write more about Readercon shortly, I’ve been catching up on a lot of stuff. Busy, busy, busy…!

YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! *high five*

Court tosses FCC `wardrobe malfunction’ fine

Fuck you, FCC!!!!!

This still does not address the fundamental obscenity and spiritual sickness of our culture regarding any naked breast (for that matter, a naked penis) as “indecent” by definition, regardless of circumstances. Maybe now we can address that.

Readercon 19 this weekend!

I will be appearing at Readercon 19 this weekend, beginning Thursday evening, July 17th, through Sunday, July 20th, at the Boston Marriott Burlington in Burlington, Massachusetts. The Boston Marriott Burlington is on Route 128 northwest of Boston, off exit 33B (Route 3A). There are about 600 parking spots, with 300 in an overflow lot downhill, and an MBTA bus from Boston stops at the hotel. Go here for more details.

I’ll be participating in the Broad Universe Rapid Fire Reading at Readercon on Saturday, July19th at 11:00 a.m., along with Broad Universe members Roxanne Bland, Justine Graykin, Elaine Isaak, Elissa Malcohn, Sarah Micklem, Trisha J. Wooldridge, Phoebe Wray and Jennifer Pelland (emcee). We’re all going to have to pick really juicy excerpts because we only have five minutes each–you definitely won’t be bored!

During the rest of the convention, I will be assisting with the Broad Universe table in the Readercon Bookshop, attending programming, and generally circulating. I’ll be offering a Readercon Special: buy a copy of Mortal Touch from the Broad Universe Table or from Withywindle Books, and you can request a free, five-minute Tarot reading! (The reading is optional, of course, the offer is only good until the end of the convention, and it is transferrable–I’ll give a reading to anyone you choose for each copy of Mortal Touch you buy.)

Readercon 19 is open to the general public on Thursday evening. I’ll be there, along with many great authors and serious readers of genre fiction. If you’re in the area, you’re welcome–see here for details.
