Adventures in home ownership, chapter 1,236

So, I just had the gas company man here, at 1:30 a.m., in a thunderstorm, to shut off the gas to my kitchen stove. Arrgghh…

I’ve been noticing whiffs of gas smell off and on for a while, but only tiny little whiffs. I knew I had to have the stove looked at, but I just hadn’t gotten to it. Well, tonight, the smell was more persistent, stronger, and…the stove was hissing. I knew that couldn’t be good. 8-(

So, with visions of the house blowing up at the crack of dawn and reducing all of us to charred bones (you think your mind is full of icky bits, lourdesmont? *heh*), I called the gas company (three times, but let’s not go there), and the maintenance guy came out, poked around the stove, and turned off the gas. He said the flexible connector hose thingie in back has cracked. I can replace the stove, or just the connector, but I need to call an appliance service for that. Meanwhile, I can function without the stove for a little while. I have a microwave, a toaster-broiler and a propane camp stove. I’m sure my dad would be delighted if I ran up to his house to bake bread! 🙂

At least now I’ll have a bit more peace of mind, because those little whiffs of gas smell were making me nervous. But yeesh–of course the darn thing decides to spring a serious leak in the middle of a pitch dark night when it’s pouring rain and thundering! I don’t know if the gas company will charge me for this…but I don’t care, actually.

Now I need to think about creative stove solutions. I actually got this one for free, from a co-worker who was remodelling her house. Hmmmm…
