But somebody else stole Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, as far as I’m concerned, and it’s someone I have yet to see even mentioned in any of the critics’ or viewers’ reviews so far. My favorite character in the whole movie is James Norrington, played by actor Jack Davenport. I won’t spoil anything by saying exactly why. But of all the returning characters, Norrington is the only one who has changed significantly, and at the same time, his change is completely plausible. Maybe my enjoyment comes from being an actor and writer, so that I was vicariously appreciating just how much fun it must have been for Davenport to get to do something so over-the-top and completely different with the same character. I know -I- would have loved it, and he’s so deliciously…well, you’ll have to see the film.

I was so taken by Norrington that I looked Jack Davenport’s resume up, and I’m somewhat humbled to see that I’ve been a fan of his all along, I just didn’t trouble to connect his name and his roles. He starred in the 1998 British vampire miniseries Ultraviolet as the young police officer reluctantly drawn into a vampire-hunting cabal, and he was Matt Damon’s gay musician lover (who comes to a very sad end) in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). I’m going to start following his career much more closely! He was in a rather obscure vampire movie with Jude Law, The Wisdom of Crocodiles (2000), that I haven’t seen and need to.

This is Davenport’s third movie with Johnny Depp, he’s also in The Libertine (2005). I collect all of Johnny Depp’s films, so I’ll be seeing that one–it was trashed by the critics but I’ll decide for myself whether it deserves it. Ty Burr of the Boston Globe hacked up hairballs all over “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” but I think Mr. Burr needs to have his medications checked (his hemorrhoid medication at the very least). *wry look*

Okay, I’m a huge Johnny Depp fan and I enjoy his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow as much as anyone.
