From there he
\nwent to sea to write short stories until David Simon called to invite
\nhim to the staff of HBO’s “The Wire.” Alvarez worked on the first three
\nseasons of the show and wrote the companion book to the award-winning
\nshow, “Truth Be Told: The Wire.” <\/p>\n
Based in Baltimore and Los Angeles, Alvarez is something of a literary
\nrenaissance man. He read encyclopedias as a child, and grew up to be a
\nwalking encyclopedia of writing knowledge. <\/p>\n
The Sun published two anthologies of his newspaper work: “Hometown Boy”
\nand “Storyteller.” Alvarez also wrote two collections of short fiction:
\n“The Fountain of Highlandtown” and “Orlo and Leini.” He is also the
\nauthor of “First and Forever,” a long oral history of the Archdiocese of
\nBaltimore, published in 2006. Books by Alvarez are available through the
\nMinas Gallery, 815 West 36th street in Hampden.
