ConBust

My schedule at ConBust this weekend:

Saturday 3:00 p.m.:”Lady and the Vamp–how women writers shape the vampire genre”
When women started writing vampire stories, they influenced the entire field to shift in lasting ways. Few people would argue that vampires in general are more popular with female readers than males. What are some of the themes that women writers emphasize in vampire fiction, and why do these appeal so strongly to female readers?

Saturday 5:00 p.m.: “Money, Market, Sequels–what makes a book look good to a publisher, and why”
One of the biggest problems for writers is the “perception gap” between them and the editors and publishers who buy or reject their work. What are publishers really looking for when they evaluate a manuscript, and why do their decisions often seem incomprehensible to authors? Should writers adjust their work to meet the expectations of the market, or should they write what they want and hope to find the “right publisher?” Is writing for commercial appeal selling out–or successful selling?

Sunday 9:00 a.m.: Broad Universe Rapid Fire Reading
I’ll be joined by sister Broads Phoebe Wray, Trisha Wooldridge, Morven Westfield and Lynn Flewelling, as we each do a short reading from our work.

ConBust is held on the campus of Smith College in Northampton, MA. The parking is free and they accept registration at the door for any day of the convention or the whole weekend.

Interesting writing quote

I’m reading old short stories as I prep for a presentation this weekend, and I ran across this quote:

“…a novelist lays the scene of his drama and expects his characters to slide about in the grooves like puppets. It is only when mine surprise me that I feel they are alive.”

from “A Mystery of the Campagna” by Anne Crawford, 1887
