For those who may have been hearing the rumors, this is what it’s doing here.

We haven’t seen the sun since Monday, May 8th. It’s been raining most of that time–misting, sprinkling, showering, pouring, or outright toad-strangler deluge. It hasn’t been quite as bad out here in the Montachusett region as north and northwest of Boston. We haven’t had the 17 inches (that’s 43 cm) of rain that they’ve gotten in Newburyport in the past week. (Our official total for this weekend is 5.49 inches [14 cm] but that’s on top of what fell Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.) But the Nashua river, going over the dam at the bridge in East Pepperell, is extremely impressive. Roaring, angry, trees sticking up out of four to six feet of water wondering what the heck is going on…whew. They’re calling this the worst flooding since the 1930’s–multiple records have been broken both for flood heights and rainfall. The storm, on satellite and radar shots, has really been amazing to watch, this huge swirl just going around and around.

One particularly striking effect has been the rain coming in from the southeast and moving north and northwest–the opposite direction that storms usually take here. It’s kind of spooky.
