So many books, so little space!

Some recent comments by halfmoon_mollie and thinkerofthunks led me to consider whether I might have too many books. I actually don’t think so; I don’t think I have nearly enough books. My real problem is that I don’t have enough space. But I grabbed my camera today and decided to take a few pictures of some–not all, just some–of the books in my four-room house, and let you be the judge. Do I have too many books?

Floor to ceiling bookcase jerry-rigged out of boards, cinder blocks and milk crates. This version is very steady. The first version collapsed at 3:00am one night right after I put it up–books, boards and milk crates all over the place. Amazingly, nothing was broken!

More books–free-standing pine bookcase I bought unfinished and sort-of finished.

More books and stuff–another pine bookcase, slightly larger, and four milk crates in a stack.

Eight-crate bookcase with more books and stuff. These four photos are all in the same room–and do not show all the books in the room. Basically, if there’s a flat surface in my house, there are probably books on it!

One wall of books in the living room.

More books, plus Yorick and my collection of naked men. (Besides books, I collect tasteful statues of undraped male nudes–which are amazingly hard to find!) Yes, the bookcase is listing to port. That’s as far as it’s going, though–the lower shelves are packed tight and they hold the shelf unit up.

The mantel and overmantel–more books, a set of bookends I rescued from a Victorian mansion that was being torn down, and my sword-and-besom Pagan version of the yin-and-yang.

The books at my elbow at the moment–my kitchen table is my office. This is why I can’t do that meme about grabbing the book nearest to you and opening it to page 23. This is not all the books on the table–there are about 24 inches of cookbooks under the hutch on the table and more books on the left end.

So, do I have too many books, or not yet enough?
