Hazards of shortening a book description…

While I have gotten rather deft at reducing book descriptions to a set number of words, I always feel that there is potential for misunderstandings once you get below a certain point. Today I spotted a description in the new One Spirit Book Club mailing that exemplifies this:

Based on ancient prophecies, this authoritative and highly engaging portrait explains just how close the earth could be to extinction–and why it could be a wonderful opportunity.

I think I know what the blurb-writer means, but, ummmm…

(The book is Apocalypse 2012 by Lawrence E. Joseph. Given the number of books about the whole “2012” thing that are out, clearly it is providing a wonderful opportunity for authors of doomsday books. *wry smile*)

And, gakked from anderyn:

Wood type: olive
Length: 11½ inches
Core: Gryffon Feather
