A Daily Schmoopie…

No one has posted a schmoopie for a little while…and I don’t even know if I’m entitled to post schmoopies. But it seems that some people on my flist could use one, and this is a bit from the as-yet-untitled novel I’m currently finishing up (aiming for a pub date of February 2008, as of now). I just kind of like it.

These two characters are not lovers–they will be, but they don’t know that yet. They are collaborating on a very complex piece of magical work that one of them does not expect to survive.

She looked at the athanor, seeing an illusion of rippling water before her vision, and blinked. Thomas was right. They couldn’t possibly fail. The athanor wasn’t even finished yet, and she was already almost in awe of it. She felt his hands tighten on hers, and when she looked back at him, he stepped forward, bent down, and kissed her on the lips. She was so startled that for a moment she didn’t respond. His lips were cold, but they felt very soft. Her heart was racing, and there seemed to be a low sound all around her, like the humming of a beehive in late summer, dripping and oozing with honey. She finally remembered to open her mouth and return his kiss, and she reached her hands forward and slid them from his chest to his sides, feeling his lean body, aching at the touch of it. He broke off the kiss, slowly, and drew back, and for a moment she saw in his eyes the look that Brent must have seen, and her heart caught in her throat. But then the look was gone, victim to his desperate sense of urgency.
