Students at Sizer are Reclaiming Sunshine

New student environmental club to work with the community to enact change!

"Becoming a part of this group is becoming a part of something bigger than yourself. You will get the chance to connect with the Sizer community, and more importantly, make a positive change in your environment. Why not join a group dedicated to making the world a better place?"

That's what 9th grade Sizer School student Elysia Cornier has to say about joining Reclaiming Sunshine, Sizer School's new Environmental Club.

"So many people don't realize the power that they have as an individual, and I think this group can be one of the ways our students can start to feel empowered, as we help them understand that there is so much good they have to offer this world," said 9th Grade ELA teacher Cassie Johnson.

Johnson will be leading Reclaiming Sunshine as the club advisor. But it was Cornier herself, that first approached her ELA teacher with the club idea.

"What inspired me to create this club was everything that I have seen and heard, in just this short time that I've been on this planet," said Cornier. "I think it's so important to take care of the planet, just as much as it takes care of us. The only way to achieve this is through hard work as a community."

Cornier approached Johnson with the club, which she had already started herself through Google Meets.

"I have always been interested in Conservation and Environmental Advocacy, but in the past year I have taken more action than ever in reducing my carbon footprint, and convincing others to do the same," said Cornier.

What was originally a group of friends hoping to make a change in their communities, is now a full Sizer School Club looking to gain more members and make connections with local groups and organizations focused on environmental issues.

"As a group, we intend to reach out to outside organizations/nonprofits, etc. I want to build good relationships with others that can help plan events, fundraise, and support our causes," said Cornier. "Some of the environmental issues we would like to address as a club include: climate change, pollution, and wildlife conservation."

Cornier added, "My hopes for the overall impact of the club on the Sizer community are to inspire others the way I am inspired by the work that I plan on carrying out. I would like to start something that will become something that is carried on long after I graduate."

Johnson says, "With the activities we will be doing in this club, students will have a chance to take pride in their environment and help make our school a more sustainable and overall environmentally-friendly place."

Though this club will be run virtually for the time being, both Johnson and Cornier hope to foster relationships with alumni and outside agencies to help enact community-wide changes.

"I hope this club will help unite different types of people within our community, and give them a chance to connect with others who they may not otherwise get the chance to. And all over one of the most noble and needed causes there are today - OUR planet!" said Johnson.
