Sportsmanship & Coach of the Year awards plus history-making mark Sizer School winter sports season

Sizer School Basketball
WCAC All-Star Angel Maldonado of Fitchburg goes in for a layup. Maldonado and other key team leaders helped bring the Sizer School Boys Basketball Team to a season finish of 8-12.

The Sizer School Girls Varsity Basketball Team finished their season 8-12 this year, which is surpasses last year’s record of 7-13. Their season saw several surprises, including multiple 8th grade players stepping up and clocking valuable varsity minutes.

"Going into the season we didn't know what to expect with the majority of the team being middle schoolers,” said Athletic Director Timothy Sargent. “But, watching them work, grow, and raise their game to compete at the varsity level was exciting to see. We have a good core of young players and the future of the program looks to be going in the right direction.”

8th grade students Amanda King of Townsend, Caroline Ferguson of Lunenburg, and Elysia Cornier of Fitchburg were a few of the 8th graders who made significant contributions to the team’s success. Also, Odette Amoakohene's leadership and defense shut down the best players on opposite teams and this Fitchburg student was a captain as a sophomore on the team.

“The keys to our success this season were veteran players Wiley Doucette and Anna Pettirossi,” said Sargent. “Anna had quite the senior season as she led the team and the league with 239 points. Anna and Wiley were crucial in the development of the young team. Their leadership helped drive the team’s success."

Elysia Cornier scored 136 points, which was the second highest total on the team. Cornier, along with Wiley Doucette of Westminster and Anna Pettirossi of Hubbardston were voted WCAC All-Stars.

Further, the Girls Basketball Team was voted by the WCAC as the Sportsmanship Award Winner. Coach Ryan Prescott was voted WCAC Coach of the Year.

The Boys Varsity Basketball Team finished their season 8-12. First-year Coach Derek Patno did a great job coming in and building on the success of last season according to Sargent.

"Being a first year coach can be difficult, but coach Derek Patno came in and the transition could not have gone more smoothly,” said Sargent. “Coach Patno and team captain Sebastian Rodriguez got together at the beginning of the season and laid out their expectations. Both had the same goals in mind. Ultimately they did not reach their main goal of making it to the district playoff but this team became a family. The bond the team created was more important than the wins and loses."

Seniors Sebastian Rodriguez of Ashby and Noah Colbert of Fitchburg led the way for the boys offensively. Colbert scored 229 points and Rodriguez scored 259.

With a finishing score of 259, Rodriguez’s high school career total closed out at 1,248 points.

Rodriguez is the only 1,000 point scorer in Sizer School history. He will graduate from Sizer School with the most points scored for a Sizer basketball player.

The boys team also had three WCAC All-Stars: Sebastian Rodriguez, Noah Colbert, and Angel Maldonado of Fitchburg.
