Fandom Panels / Re: How to be a Good Panelist (or Moderator)
« Last post by morvenwestfield on February 18, 2014, 02:49:51 PM »
In the Facebook Boskone group, I commented on how well I thought the panels were run. This wasn't just my opinion; I heard it, unsolicited from people throughout the weekend.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/boskone/

What made the panels more valuable was that:

  • The moderators were prepared (One panelist told me she read a book by each of her author panelists)
  • The moderators had a prepared set of questions to ask (but didn't let that prevent them from asking things that came up on their own)
  • The panelists waited their turn to speak, writing down notes if it wasn't their turn yet (something I had to train myself to do -- my natural instict is to just speak)
  • Most of the time moderators asked the audience to hold off with questions, but would stop every now and then to ask if there were any
  • No one panelist was allowed to hog the conversation.

I think that discussing these courtesies would help future panelists perform better in panels, and, if you read the response to my comment on the Boskone group, would help them get repeat invitations to panels.

We could also discuss barriers to good panels. (For example, a con assigns you to 7 or 8 panels on various topics. Do you really have time to prepare? How do you say no gracefully and let the programming people know it's better if you say no?)

The Admin should be checking in soon, and she can contact you. I don't know if there's another way to connect.

Literary Panels / Day Jobs for Writers
« Last post by morvenwestfield on February 10, 2014, 10:13:44 PM »
What's the best day job for a writer? Is it a writing job that helps you learn to craft a sentence, work with an editor, and meet deadlines? Or a less-demanding job that gives you time -- and brain-width -- to think about your current work-in-progress.  Writers talk about their day jobs and how they've helped or hindered their writing progress.

Media Panels / The Same Old Story
« Last post by Geoclac on February 03, 2014, 05:31:27 PM »
Vampire teenage romance, fairy tales in modern settings, Star Trek programs that mimic police procedurals and medical response programs (actually being discussed right now) and, coming up, TWO shows (at least) set in OZ.
With all of the stories there are in the world and all of history to draw on why do storytellers (and TV producers) keep telling the same stories over and over again?
With all of the rehashing of the Civil War we have never had a series about espionage in that period. Given all of the westerns there have been, we have never seen the story of Bass Reeves (a real U.S. Marshal) who captured 30,000 criminals in his lifetime. Given people's love of pirates, why have we not seen the story of the various pirate queens?
Come and discuss what stories need to be told, and maybe find a few that you want to tell yourself.

Here's some fodder (and justification) for the panel - Might we need to be more welcoming to noobs?

Erin Underwood just posted a great article on the Boskone blog. This would be a good jumping-off point.

If information is directly downloaded to the brain, doesn't that eliminate teachers?
