Science and Technology Panels / The Social Problems of New Technology
« on: March 10, 2014, 09:23:25 PM »
A year, or so, ago, Goggle Glass was thought to be the next big thing, now people just see it as creepy. How does society adjust to new technologies and what tech is likely to come along that will create even more social unrest?

Media Panels / The Same Old Story
« on: February 03, 2014, 05:31:27 PM »
Vampire teenage romance, fairy tales in modern settings, Star Trek programs that mimic police procedurals and medical response programs (actually being discussed right now) and, coming up, TWO shows (at least) set in OZ.
With all of the stories there are in the world and all of history to draw on why do storytellers (and TV producers) keep telling the same stories over and over again?
With all of the rehashing of the Civil War we have never had a series about espionage in that period. Given all of the westerns there have been, we have never seen the story of Bass Reeves (a real U.S. Marshal) who captured 30,000 criminals in his lifetime. Given people's love of pirates, why have we not seen the story of the various pirate queens?
Come and discuss what stories need to be told, and maybe find a few that you want to tell yourself.

If information is directly downloaded to the brain, doesn't that eliminate teachers?

The use, and misuse, of people of color in genre fiction.
Many works of science fiction ignore the existence of people of color, others (e.g. Lucifer's Hammer, Continuum), portray people of color as thugs, terrorists and cannibals.
In some cases (Avatar: the Last Air Bender, Earthsea) people of color are removed from the story and replaced by whites. Why is this? Do producers believe that genre fans cannot handle the idea of people of color on spaceships or in fantasy worlds? Why was there such ranging anger on the part of some Americans when they realized that characters from the Hunger Games were black?

Media Panels / Why T.V. Superheroes so Often Fail
« on: January 30, 2014, 05:27:20 PM »
Over the years television has introduced a number of superhero series, most of them bad,. Why is it that TV cannot get right something that the comics have been doing successfully since the 1930s? Do the TV writers not understand the genre?
There have been a few successes, Smallville (like it or not), Arrow, The Greatest American Hero, Wonder Woman, Batman, ; and many failures, Heroes, The Cape, Birds of Prey, Tarzan (the 2003 TV series, what you don't remember it?  ;)).

Suggest new track category or other idea / General Lifestyle

There is a category for alternative lifestyles, but how about one for just lifestyle?
Exercise panels, for example, are not really "alternative."

This is a good idea, and we might want to consider a workshop to show people how to do simple exercises. In fact, I will propose this myself.

Robots of War
We already have military robots, including boats, aircraft and ground units, there is discussion of making these machines more autonomous, don't people in the military ever read science fiction?
What effects, if any, will robotic warfare have on human life?
How do you create safeguards to protect your own society from the ravages of the machines that you have built?

You want to write the great American novel? Good luck with that, but don't try to do it in an RPG.
Keep in mind that, as a game master, your primary job is to create an environment in which your player characters can interact with the world and create their story.
Come and discuss tips for building fun exciting worlds and for avoiding the various traps and pitfalls that lie in wait for the unwary game master.
Discuss the various kinds of tabletop RPGs and what works best for different groups of gamers.

Is there an essential storytelling difference between low powered vigilantes (Daredevil, Power Man, Batman, Nite Owl) and four color superheroes?
Do you lose drama when your hero cannot be hurt by normal means?
Is it easier to tell a dramatic story that the audience can relate to when the hero is just a well trained person fighting crime?

Comics and Graphic Novels panels / Supermen as Gods
« on: January 26, 2014, 09:42:12 AM »
Supers in most of our comic books first appear in the 1920s, what if they had shown up in the 14th century?
If Superman had landed in Europe in the 1300s, would he have become a warlord, or would he have become a god?
If Black Panther had come into his power in the Middle Ages, would Wakanda have conquered all of Africa and then moved out to overwhelm Europe and Asia?
What effect would the culture they developed in have on the relationship between supers and the world that they live in?
